Passengers on board the US Airways plane that ditched in the Hudson River in New York City last Thursday have each been sent checks for $5,000 by the carrier, it has been reported.
The letter accompanying the check to the passengers noted that the payment is to “assist you with your immediate needs.” The airline is also reimbursing passengers for their airfare.
US Airways advised the 150 passengers on flight 1549 that it may take months before their personal effects could be returned to them and that some items might not be able to be salvaged. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is in the process of drying all items on the plane in order to weigh them, as part of its investigation, according to the airline.
NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson revealed on Tuesday that New Jersey State Police have located the plane’s right engine, which is thought to have torn off when the aircraft hit the icy waters off Manhattan.
With the help of sonar, a police boat located an object beneath the water that matches the profile of the engine, and it was recovered by accident investigators.
“Once our investigators saw the (sonar) images, that increased their level of confidence that that is indeed the engine,” Knudson added.
