PCS Union for UK driving test examiners announces strike

The UK’s union for driving test centre examiners says its members will be working to rule and staging a two-day strike. The Public and Commercial Service Union stated that the work-to-rule would begin on the 23 November and the strike on the 4 December.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka explained that Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) examiners would have to work a lot harder once the new UK driving test was launched on the 4 December. He carried on by saying the requirement of conducting seven tests per day for each examiner should be cut to six.

He claimed the vote for the work-to-rule and strike action had been overwhelming. He elucidated by saying the additional parts of the test added to the examiners’ workload while the satnav navigation section had not proved to be completely safe in trials. The PCS has demanded the launch date of the new test is postponed while more safety assessments are carried out.

The PCS ballot attracted a 70 per cent turnout and 84 per cent vote for action over the new tests. The work-to-rule will see examiners at driving test centres in England, Scotland and Wales follow the terms of their employment contracts, but bar them from doing extra duties and overtime.

The DVSA’s Gareth Llewellyn alleged the PCS was undermining the new driving test launch. The CEO added that any industrial action was a slap in the face for safety advocates and learner drivers. He finished off by saying the new tests would assess the skills of learners accurately and ensure they had the requisite skills to drive safely.
