Pet Airways gets ready for take-off

Earlier this week the first Pet Airways jet took off from New York ending the company’s four year wait.

This was an idea set up by a couple who once took their pet Jack Russell on a flight. Unfortunately for the pet he was stored down below in the baggage compartment, where temperatures are known to fluctuate. Owners Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel tried to find out the condition of Zoe while in flight, but there was nothing anyone could do.

They later sat down and thought of alternatives for people wanting the pets to have a safe comfortable flight. In 2005 Pet Airways was started and in the mean time they have been working with planners on how to adapt a plane so that pets can travel instead of humans.

They now have a fleet of five specially adapted Suburban Air Freight planes that have carriers instead of seats. The animals will be checked every 15 minutes on flights and there is a maximum of 50, four legged friends per flight.

Flights are charged at $250 for a one way flight between New York, Chicago, Washington, Denver and Los Angeles and are all booked up for the next two months.
