Plans proposed for Southwold beach to go nudist
Posted on: September 1st, 2009 by Samantha WilliamsPlans for one of the poshest beaches in the UK to turn into a nudist beach are being fought by angry locals. The Suffolk coast is notorious for its high society hotels and top class shops, but resorts and traders and residents in the fashionable area of Southwold are concerned that if the beach were to turn nudist friendly that famillies would no longer visit.
Also known as Chelsea-on-Sea, Southwold is one of the most costly towns on the English coast to visit and even the beach huts can fetch up to £100,000. Among its holidaymakers is Gordon Brown who enjoyed a break with his family there last year. The heritage coastline is apparently catching the eye of naturists who are looking for a new beach to descend on as the official nudist beach in Corton only 16 miles from Southwold is due to be closed after becoming unfit after suffering coastal erosion.
The town major, Sue Doy said that she had nothing against this in principal but she would not want to use it herself. She also didn’t think there would be room on the beach as it normally gets very crowded with holidaymakers. Worried residents can take comfort in a statement made by Ken Sale, the council’s portfolio holder for the Environment who said that this stage they are ‘fact finding’ and should any potential site meet the criteria laid down for such a facility they will seek to explore the options further.
