Police in New Mexico have uncovered all the gory details about how a convicted criminal planned to kill teen pop star Justin Bieber with the help of his nephew. The scheme started out with kidnapping the singer and then moved into torturing and finally castrating him. The murder plot was intended to be carried out last month, with the men travelling to New York City while Bieber performed two shows at Madison Square Garden.
The plan was developed by 41-year-old Mark Aaron Staake and 23-year-old Tanner Ruane (his nephew), and the details of their plot were laid out in a confession obtained by State Police in New Mexico. However, the initial mastermind behind the scheme was 45-year-old convicted felon Dana Martin, who is jail serving two life sentences in a New Mexico prison for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old Vermont girl in 2000. The convicted murderer has been characterised as a good manipulator.
Martin and Staake met in New Mexico in April while they served time in a prison near Las Cruces. The affidavit says that Martin lured Staake into being a hit man for him, incentivising the job with a well-paid reward that included a hideout worth millions of dollars. However, police have revealed that it was all a scam built on a prison friendship and driven by Martin’s obsession with Bieber. He has apparently written the 18-year-old letters and has a tattoo of the teen singer on his leg.
Martin planned for Staake to kidnap, murder and castrate a total of four people across two states: Bieber, the singer’s bodyguard and two others in Vermont. His instructions included the strangling of the victims with a paisley necktie, which is his weapon of choice after using it in other crimes. He then instructed his prison mate to castrate the targets with Fiskars “Durasharp” garden clippers.
Staake, who asked his nephew to help him with the hits, has been jailed several times for DWI, burglary and drug arrests and was released from this recent bout in prison in October. The two hit men planned to take out the two other targets in Vermont first. These two people were unnamed acquaintances of Martin who are said to have witnessed his crime in 2000. However, while en route the pair missed their exit and headed over the Canadian border. On 19 November, a US border agent stopped their 1983 BMW at the border crossing in Highgate Springs after they got lost. Staake was then arrested because of outstanding warrants in New Mexico.
This left Ruane on his own, so he called Martin at the prison and said he wouldn’t go through with the plans without his uncle. He called the convicted murderer again as he drove to Rotterdam, New York, and the two talked about some of the plot’s gory details. The following day, Martin confessed everything to police, which led to Ruane’s arrest on 26 November. Bieber’s performances on 28 and 29 November were then able to go ahead without any problems or hint about the plans for his murder.
The entourage that follows Justin Bieber consists of former Israeli soldier Moshe Benabou, the security director, as well as Dustin Folkes, a celebrity bodyguard. In a statement, the singer’s management said that they take every precaution to protect and ensure Bieber and his fans are safe.
