Two highly trained German Shepard police dogs died in a car on Tuesday after being left in temperatures that reached 29.4C. They were left in a private vehicle while the handler, who was on duty, went into the police station. The dogs were later found dead. The police force had recently just spent £300,000 on state of the art kennels.
The officer who has not been suspended is at home on leave for now but the police force confirmed that he could face prosecution which carries a maximum term of six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.
“I think there will be some retribution for this at some point in the future, but I know the team will be mortified. It’s a very close-knit team. It’s tragic when you consider we have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on kennels. Unfortunately tragedies do happen,” said Councillor John Clarke, chairman of Nottinghamshire Police Authority.
Nottinghamshire Police said that they have had a lot of phone calls from members of the public voicing their opinions on the matter. Chief Superintendent Ak Khan said that the matter will be investigated and that they want to learn from this tragedy so it never happens again.
