Police Fight Olympic Ticket Scams

2012 London Olympics LogoThis year is going to be a huge one for London. The Summer Olympic Games are sure to bring in tourists from all over the world. However, with so much attention being placed on one event, there are a number of scam artists who are looking forward to taking advantage of it as well.

Local reports show that nearly 100 people have already been arrested for trying to sell fake tickets to the Olympic Games. Not only are they trying to sell fake tickets, but they are also trying to make some easy money by selling nonexistent hotel rooms. These scams come during a time when thousands of people are trying to buy tickets and accommodations for the summer Games. Home Secretary Theresa May says that people need to watch out for fake Olympic websites (also known as phishing sites).

As one can more than likely guess, the demand for tickets this year has been huge. There are some rooms in the UK that are already selling for more than 600 pounds, or the same as $1,000. Thus, it is easy for someone to fall for a scam that promises them a cheap room at half the price. If a deal sounds too go to be true, it typically is.

Theresa May said that police are already sending a very clear message to all the scam artists out there. The message is that the UK will not tolerate intrusions by organized criminals into the Olympic Games. This is the message that she gave at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

Although a number of people are worried about falling for a scam, there is another issue that millions of people are worried about, and that is the threat of terrorism. The Olympic Games have always been a huge draw for terrorist groups like al-Qaida. On top of that, London is no stranger to terrorist attacks. Back in 2005, the London transit system was attacked by suicide bombers. This led to the death of some 52 people. Oddly enough, this happened the day-after London won the 2012 Olympic bid.

However, officials are telling people around the world not to worry. They said that there is no evidence that suggests a terrorist attack will take place during the Games. Despite this fact, the threat level will be raised to severe. This will be done to better protect people who are traveling to London to enjoy the Games.

Right now, the best thing that people can do to protect themselves is to avoid Olympic scams. When buying tickets to the Olympic Games, only buy from official suppliers. Furthermore, be sure to use trusted sites (maybe sites you have used in the past) to book hotel rooms.
