It appears as though Porter Airlines may ultimately be given the go-ahead by American aviation authorities to double the number of daily flights it offers from Toronto’s City Centre Airport to Newark Liberty, one of three hubs serving the New York City area. The carrier plans to launch the new flights within a year, primarily because the currently offered seven daily flights have been hugely popular, with nearly every seat sold out. Despite this, aviation authorities had originally asked the Canadian airline to cut back its flights to six a day, due to constant congestion at the airport. Nevertheless, cutbacks by some other airlines will mean that as much as 3 percent of all landing spaces may soon free up, this will likely permit Porter to expand its position at the airport after all. Robert Deluce, Porter’s chief executive officer, told journalists that his airline seems to have the “momentum,” while most other carriers are looking at ways to cutback on routes, staff and planes.
A spokesperson for Canada’s only full-service airline noted that Porter is also being helped by the fact that several US carriers have decided to cut back on their service at Newark Airport, which means that Porter has a better chance of establishing a prominent presence at this important American hub. Continental Airlines has already confirmed its decision to decrease its operations at Newark by up to 3 percent and Porter is clearly going to be at the front of the line when it comes to trying to scoop up some of the newly available landing spots.
Porter Airlines offers daily commuter flights from Toronto to Montreal , Ottawa and Newark, as well as weekly service to Halifax and Quebec City. The carrier’s reputation is based on offering all passengers premium, full-service on flights, at competitive prices.
