Militants opposed to a third runway being constructed at Heathrow will attempt to stop the expansion through a number of direct action protests beginning in the New Year, the Standard has reported.
They have said that coordinated attacks will be carried out with the aim of causing as much disruption as possible. Protesters say that they will target leading MPs and Heathrow officials, as retribution for their “broken promises.”
Hardcore activists are also enlisting the support of local residents, some from the wealthiest suburbs in west London, to attend training camps in activities designed to bring the operations at the airport to a standstill.
The chairman of protest group HACAN ClearSkies, John Stewart, commented that actions will include blasting music outside the homes of MPs early in the morning, jamming roads around the airports with cars on a go-slow, chaining themselves to each other at the airport and perhaps even boarding a plane or invading a runway.
Stewart noted that even middle-aged housewives were ready to take part. “They are keen on a ‘go-slow’ around the perimeter around Heathrow, spending a day blocking the entrance to BAA’s headquarters and playing music,” he added.
“Going on to the runway or boarding a plane is very much a last resort. That is all or nothing – it is almost life or death. There is no question that frustration is mounting. These ideas are coming from residents, many of whom have lived in the area for 20 or 30 years,” he said.
