Red Bull wins Shanghai F1

The rainy conditions and slippery track didn’t stop Sebastian Vettel from dominating the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday, leading to Red Bull’s first Formula One win.

“It was the right decision to start behind the safety car, because there was quite a lot of standing water,” Vettel commented. “It was okay at some points, but some corners at every lap, it was a lot of aqua-planing, sometimes less and sometimes more, depending on the rain. It was very difficult throughout the whole race.”

On lap 15, Vettel made his first stop, and the lead was taken over by Jenson Button. When Vettel rejoined, he was in third position.

On the next lap, an incident caused the safety car to be deployed, and Button made a pit stop, allowing Vettel to reclaim the lead. When Button rejoined, he entered in second position.

Vettel pitted once again from the lead position on lap 37, regaining the lead four laps later, and maintaining it for the rest of the race as he drove past Button. Soon afterwards, Webber moved into second position.

“I’m extremely happy, second time in the wet that I have won a grand prix,” he said. “The car was fantastic. The team did a really good job in preparing the car yesterday in qualifying, but nonetheless we were struggling a little bit with reliability. We were able to fix it overnight.”

The F1 victory at Shanghai was Vettel’s second career win.

Webber’s second-place finish matched his career best, and gave Red Bull a one-two finish in this year’s Grand Prix.
