Rental car fill-ups to cost less

The Hertz Corp. is making it cheaper for customers to return rental cars without refilling the gas tank.

Beginning on July 1, the car rental subsidiary of Hertz Global Holdings Inc. will only charge customers the market rate for gas plus a refueling fee of $6.99, when they return a rented car with a gas tank that isn’t completely full.

Before this new plan goes into effect, customers are charged around $7.50 per gallon when their rented vehicle is returned with a partially empty tank, the company explained. Customers will still be able to refuel a car before returning it, avoiding additional charges.

Hertz’s new program will be offered at all airport and off-airport Hertz rental locations in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas.

In other program news, Hertz is extending its “free tank of gas” offer on rental vehicles that are picked up by July 14.

For a three-day rental of an economy- through full-sized car at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada, customers are receiving a free tank of gas.

Advance reservations are required to take advantage of this offer, which is subject to location and availability.
