Renters beware warns IAM
Posted on: June 14th, 2008 by Martin FellowesThe Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) is advising motorists to check the fine print when arranging car hire for their vacation, especially when it comes to insurance coverage and obligations for excess payments.
“You have to check that things like the excess insurance are as you thought they were going to be and you have to make sure you have got the car you think you were going to get”, says Neil Greig, one of IAM’s directors.
Complaints from short-changed renters usually come to late for them to remedy the situation and, according to the IAM, could usually have been avoided by checking the contract deals first.
Car rental has been described as ‘potential nightmare’ by consumer group Which?, and holidaymakers often end up paying far more than they thought when hiring vehicles abroad. This is often due to exclusions in the insurance policy attached to the rental agreement, especially incidental damages such as small scratches, windscreen chips and more which are considered part of the excess and the renters liability.
By booking online, they point out, you have the chance to study the conditions first rather than being presented with them when it’s too later to change or back out of the agreement.
