Researchers say Online Pornography could be Leading to an Increase in Sexual Offenses

Jail RowSome researchers are now suggesting that online pornography could have some link to the increase in sexual offenses. Apparently the research shows that there is at least some kind of “casual link” between extreme fantasies viewed online and people committing sexual offenses in real life.

The reports are going on to suggest that some experts are saying that internet porn may, in some ways, be encouraging extreme sexual and violent fantasies. Psychologists are saying that, by viewing these acts played out online, some people feel their urges are being “reinforced.”

So what does this mean? Well it means that people who view violent porn on the internet may, on some level, feel that the act is more common than what it really is. It may also give them “support” and “urges” to go out and preform these acts themselves. The experts went on to say that they believe that internet porn is encouraging extreme sexual fantasies. They say that they believe this is the case mostly because it allows “like-minded people” to reinforce their desires and push each other.

Other experts, however, are saying that they are not so sure. This so-called “casual link” cannot prove that viewing online porn has made people any more likely, or any less likely, to go out and perform these acts. This statement also puts to rest some other arguments that viewing these acts online keeps people form going out and committing these acts themselves.

One psychologist at Worcester University, Tim Jones, has been taking this research to the next level. He has been interviewing a convicted pedophile who is simply known as James. Tim asked James if he believed that there was any kind of link between internet porn and real life sexual offenses. Reports show that James said that he believes that there is some kind of link between the two. To him it seems that the internet is “fueling” more extreme fantasies. He said that its dangerous, because it is showing people how these fantasies can be played out in real life.

However, the real question that gets brought up now is how are people able to keep this problem under control if it is indeed a problem? Experts say it’s one of those problems that falls into a “red” zone – mostly because controlling this problem would mean that the internet would have to be censored by the government. This is something that people feel would violate certain rights. These same experts say that the less things that are controlled by the government, the better.

Either way, most researchers do agree that not enough information is known to support either case. Right now acting on the information that has been found would be “premature.” They point out that it could be other forms of media as well that could be fueling these violent sexual needs.
