Rome rentals required
Posted on: May 19th, 2008 by Taylor SmithRental cars will be in high demand this weekend in Rome, since police recently impounded airport buses, leaving travellers without a convenient shuttle downtown from the airport.
A British-based company called Terravision operates the airport buses from Ciampino airport, providing transportation services for passengers on easyJet flights. A spokesperson for the company said: “The whole situation is unbelievable.”
Police on Tuesday impounded the remaining six buses left to the company, having already taken into custody 12 of Terravision’s fleet. Terravision’s marketing director, Yakuta Rajabali, said that customers who had boarded busses and loaded luggage were kicked off by police officers.
The police action caused some travelers from the city to miss their Ciampino flights, while many more travellers were stranded at the airport without any means of getting into the city.
Terravision has operated the shuttle service from the airport since 2002. According ot the police, however, the company lacks a valid licence to do so.
“But we have had judgments from justices of the peace and the Rome civil court to say our service is perfectly legal,” said Ms. Rajabali.
The police are answerable only to the city council which is not functioning temporarily as the old administration is leaving and the new council has not yet taken power. Gianni Alemanno, who is a spokesperson for the newly elected mayor-elect, explained that nothing could be done until the new mayor took office on Monday.
