Rourke to become new Donmar director

Josie Rourke will become the Donmar Warehouse theatre company’s new artistic director.

The 34-year-old is set to take up her new position on the 1st of January 2012, taking over duties from Michael Grandage, the man about to step down after spending almost a decade in the prestigious role.

Rourke was the artistic director of the Bush theatre over in the West End since 2007. Talking to the press, she revealed how she was both thrilled and honoured that those in charge of the London company had asked her to lead the way.

This new role for Rourke sees her return to the Donmar, the place she trained at as resident assistant director back in 2000. This experience gave her the chance to work alongside greats such as Michael Grandage and Nicholas Hytner – in addition to American Beauty director Sam Mendes.

There is nothing that would  make me prouder than returning to the place where it all began for me, Rourke admitted. Michael and Sam have always been friends and invaluable mentors to me and, once I take over as artistic director, I will automatically inherit the legacy of over 20 years of memorable productions, captivating performances and incredible nights out enjoying an evening at the theatre, she added.

Rourke concluded that she will continue to oversee moves at the Bush theatre that involve it moving into its new residence at Shepherd’s Bush Library before she joins the Donmar.
