Royal Caribbean Cruises Teams Up with DreamWorks Animation

Royal Caribbean Cruises, the second biggest cruise company in the world, said last Friday that they have signed an agreement with DreamWorks Animation, the animated film giant, in order to bring their characters to 4 cruise ships. Some of the characters will include the penguins of Madagascar and some from Shrek.

The debut of the Allure of the Seas in December will mark the launch of this initiative. After being launched on the Allure, the deal will be rolled out to the Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas. The Allure and Oasis both carry up to 6,000 passengers each, while the Liberty and Freedom can carry up to 4,500 each.

The announcement of this deal comes after Royal Caribbean said last month that the Allure will be the first of their ships to have a 3-D theater. It’s more clear now why that is important to the company.

Royal Caribbean Cruises senior vice president of marketing Betsy O’Rourke said that about 30% of these ships’ guests are international, and 65% of DreamWorks’ viewers are international. Having a recognition around the world, in that regard, is a key part of this relationship, she continued. The 3-year deal took over a year to work out, she added, and more ships may be added to the 4 in the future.

This isn’t the only cruise line to make such a partnership – they simply offer more expansive offerings, which includes 22 ships. On the other hand, Disney has only 3 ships.

DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said that they couldn’t be more delighted to join, what they believe, is the best quality cruise brand. DreamWorks has been to many places around the world, and they are happy to go out to sea with the number 1 partner they can find for unique and quality experiences, he added.
