Ryanair announces major network expansion
Posted on: January 15th, 2009 by Taylor SmithRyanair will be adding new aircraft at Bristol and Edinburgh airports in the UK and at Spain’s Alicante airport in a significant expansion of its network.
At Edinburgh, in March, two additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft will be added, increasing the number of planes to four. Bristol airport will see the same increase in July.
The low-cost airline will increase the size of its fleet at the Alicante airport from three to four in June.
These additional aircraft will permit Ryanair to add 12 new routes to Bristol, seven to Edinburgh and four new routes to Alicante.
On 4 June, the new Alicante routes will be launched, with services to Derry and Knock, in Ireland, and service connecting Bristol with Wroclaw, Poland, will commence on 3 July.
Bristol airport’s new routes will include flights to and from Alicante, Barcelona, Cagliari, Eindhoven, Limoges, Malta, Montpellier, Perpignan, Rimini, Seville, Toulon and Trieste. This increase in service will add 1.6 million passengers yearly to Ryanair’s traffic numbers.
The seven new routes at Edinburgh will connect the Scottish airport with Carcassonne, Limoges, Leipzig, Malta, Poitiers, Rome and Zadar. Service frequency will also be increased on the Alicante and Dusseldorf-Weeze routes beginning in late March.
Ryanair’s traffic at Edinburgh will see an increase of nearly two million passengers annually.
The Irish budget carrier celebrated the announcement of its expansion with a seat sale. It is offering one million seats priced at £1 for travel throughout Europe during February and March, for bookings made by midnight on 19 January.
