Ryanair drops Glasgow links like hot potato and blames passenger tax

Glasgow International AirportRyanair has confirmed it will be terminating the bulk of its routes from Glasgow International Airport for next winter. The budget carrier will operate only three of the current 23 routes it flies from Glasgow when the 2018 winter timetables kick in.

Affirming the news, the chief commercial officer of Ryanair, David O’Brien, laid the blame for the termination of the Glasgow connections on a double whammy. He said the first was lower than average demand for flights from Glasgow and the second was Airport Passenger Duty (APD).

Mr O’Brien said the high £13 price tag of the APD was like a millstone around the neck of any attempts to stir up interest in low-cost flights. He explained Ryanair was sorry to be pulling the plug on Glasgow and that the aircraft used on routes from this airport would be redeployed to Edinburgh Airport.

In a seemingly random remark, O’Brien finished off by claiming Brexit would cause untold damage to the airline industry and tourism in Scotland. After the Glasgow cull, Ryanair will only fly from here to Dublin and the cities of Krakow and Wroclaw in Poland.

Ryanair only added Glasgow to its destination timetables in 2014. This was a full two decades after the then fledgling carrier started services to Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

Glasgow International’s loss is Edinburgh’s gain as Ryanair is transferring routes over. Glasgow’s flight services to Berlin, Derry, Lisbon, Riga and Sofia will swap over to Edinburgh. New routes from Edinburgh to destinations such as Stockholm and Hamburg will launch at the same time.
