No-frills airline Ryanair expects to create 700 jobs in Birmingham during its next financial year as it doubles its passenger numbers at the airport.

Laszlo Tamas, the carrier’s sales and marketing manager, said that the new positions would be created if the airline achieves it target of 1.65 million passengers at Birmingham International Airport next year, which would be an increase of 81 per cent over current traffic.

Tamas made his remarks during a visit to Birmingham, when he unveiled Ryanair’s controversial new system that calls for online passenger check-in at a fee of £5, along with a £40 fee for replacing a boarding card.

Ryanair set up a new base at Birmingham airport last year, and currently employs 900 staff there, and operates 32 routes from the city.

Tamas commented: “This year we have delivered 900,000 passengers and we would like to almost double that next year. We are projecting 1.6 million. We are quite happy at Birmingham. We are happy with the airport charges and the performance rising, meanwhile the other airports are stagnating and decreasing.”

He added: “We aim for one person per 1,000 passengers so our aim is to get to 1.6 million passengers which would mean that we would create an additional 700 jobs in the 2009 to 2010 financial year.”
