Ryanair shocks German press conference
Posted on: June 23rd, 2008 by Doug SmithA statement by Ryanair’s outspoken chief executive officer, Michael O’Leary, has perplexed and reportedly “stunned” those present at a press conference in Germany. The Irish discount airline’s CEO had announced a new service that his carrier plans to introduce in the near future, which would offer passengers transatlantic flight tickets for as little as €10 in economy class cabins. As part of Ryanair’s newly proposed transatlantic service, passengers would also be able to book seats in quality business cabins, which would rival the premium product offered by both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. While explaining what this business class service would include, O’Leary said that “it will be beds and blow jobs…it will be all free including the blow jobs.”
German journalists looked stunned according to the World Travel Guide, many of whom did not quite understand what O’Leary had meant, while others were simply shocked that an airline would use such terminology. According to a report in the Daily Star, Anja Seugling, Ryanair’s marketing manager in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, found herself lost for words, as she had been in charge of translating O’Leary’s message into German. According to the Star, Seugling “began to choke on her glass of water.” Since the incident, however, a Ryanair spokesperson has officially confirmed that these were, in fact, O’Leary’s words and that the new transatlantic premium service will be given an equally explosive title.
