Ryanair vows to continue raising checked baggage fees
Posted on: October 8th, 2008 by Taylor SmithRyanair chief executive, Michael O’Leary, has reasserted that his airline will continue to raise fees for checked baggage until at least 75 per cent of its passengers travel with hand luggage only.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, O’Leary said to the journalists present: “It’s all about efficiency. Passengers won’t have to go near a check-in desk or pay for over-priced facilities at our rip-off airports.”
At present, Ryanair charges £12 for a checked bag per passenger, one way. There’s an £8 charge for the bag and a £4 charge added to the airport check-in.
During the press conference, he warned once again that the current financial crisis and the high cost of jet fuel would see the collapse of another British carrier in the coming weeks.
He also predicted, once again, that two additional European airlines would collapse before year’s end.
O’Leary pointed out that Ryanair’s passenger numbers increased by 20 per cent in September, and that BA’s traffic numbers fell by 6 per cent.
The Ryanair boss also used the press conference as an opportunity to attack its competitors on their high and “unjustified fuel surcharges.” He called on Aer Lingus, Air France, British Airways and Lufthansa to lower surcharges by 40 per cent or more, in line with the decrease in oil prices.
