Sainsburys unveil electric car charging points

The supermarket giant that is Sainsbury’s, has launched a giant network of charging points for electric cars at branches across London. The move is seen as huge boost to London Mayor, Boris Johnson’s plans to make the capital the European capital of electric cars. Mr Johnson is after a massive 25,000 charging points at sites across London at everywhere from places of work, public car parks, supermarkets and other important places. The aim to have them installed by 2015 so that they can accommodate up to the predicted 100,000 electric that could be roaming the streets of our fair capital.

Sainsbury’s have become the first major business to install them at their stores and they have so far introduced two at nine of their stores across London. Some of the location are at Beckton, Chiswick, Camden and Greenwich and Wandsworth and Whitechapel will have theirs later this month. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said they are pleased at being the first in helping the capital become cleaner and hope it will make a better environment for all that come to London. If the scheme becomes popular they plan to open more next year.

The aim of Mr Johnson is to reduce the carbon emissions in London by 60 per cent in the next 15-years. He is also introducing a cycle hire scheme across the city and hopefully make the capital the cleanest in Europe. Boris said they want to provide 2,500 recharging points with businesses supplying the other 22,500. Currently there are only 5,000 car registered in Britain that are electric, so the nation needs to start buying rechargeable cars soon, if the scheme is to really take-off.
