Scotland’s most famous spa enjoys more visitors

Crieff Hydro is a 140 year old spa that boasts the title of Scotland’s oldest spa hotel. It was originally opened as a hydro therapy spa that welcomed many families and in the last few months it has enjoyed a massive upsurge in the numbers of visitors staying at the hotel in a bid to holiday at home this year.

Stephen Leckie has managed the old hotel since 1994 and he has run it with no overdraft and no bar and practically no advertising. The economic crisis is encouraging more Scottish famillies to enjoy their holiday closer to home and as a result the hotel has welcomed more bookings than in previous years.

“We are not the primary holiday, we are the short-break holiday, but what might be happening is that people are not taking a main holiday but choosing to take a short break in Scotland instead,” commented Leckie, who has invested £30m in the hotels fight against the recession.

The hotel now serves alcohol to entice more visitors through the doors but it still claims to be a place to enjoy wholesome entertainment with games available for children to play and no gambling machines for the adults. The Crieff Hydro is mainly aimed at families and has the UK’s largest child care centre on site.
