Shipping chart inaccuracy caused cruise accident
Posted on: November 18th, 2008 by Robert BergersonIt has been confirmed by the Hellenic Hydrographic Service that last year’s cruise accident off the Greek Island of Santorini was caused by inaccuracies on a shipping chart.
The Louis Hellenic Cruise Lines, which owns the MV Sea Diamond, has reported that it has been vindicated by new findings in the investigation into the accident that occurred in April of 2007, killing two French passengers.
According to the cruise line, the Hellenic Hydrographic Office now says that the official shipping chart of the area where the accident occurred was “erroneous.”
Approximately one year ago, Akti Engineering provided a map of the accident area, demonstrating that there were serious errors in the area’s charts.
Last year’s findings by the specialist engineering firm have now been confirmed by the Hellenic Navy’s Hydrographic Office, which is the government’s official authority for surveys in all Greek waters.
According to the new information, the reef that the MV Sea Diamond struck is 131 metres off the coast, rather than 57 metres as was shown on the erroneous chart that had originally been prepared by the Hellenic Hydrographic Service.
