Short Term Renting
Posted on: July 10th, 2007 by Dave AndersonZipcar made renting a car by the hour a simpler way for people to get around without the hassle of parking or five-year financing.
The 7-year-old business caught on so well that auto rental giant Hertz noticed and is now mounting a similar strategy to go head-to-head with Zipcar in the city.
To raise awareness among consumers, Hertz is running an ad campaign with the signature line, “Your therapist bills by the hour. Now, so does Hertz.”
Zipcar, which calls its service car sharing, has tens of thousands of members in the city. An application fee and an annual fee allows Zipcar customers hourly rentals, and similar privileges in several other cities, including San Francisco and London.
Hertz’s hourly service is a members only deal andyou have to join its #1 Club Gold. There’s a $50 annual membership fee, but Hertz is giving away the memberships to hourly renters for at least a year. For frequent customers, membership will be free in future years, too. Hertz will also promote hourly rentals by sending coupons to its current #1 Club Gold members offering a free third hour for every two hours they rent. Hertz’s best known rival, Avis, does not offer hourly rentals, nor does Budget, which is part of Avis.
