Sick children treated to Lapland trip
Posted on: December 18th, 2008 by Robert BergersonChildren from various parts of Scotland who have life-threatening illnesses have been treated to a visit to Lapland for some time with Santa Claus.
The plane, called the Lapland Express, departed Prestwick Airport early on Wednesday morning with 57 children and their families on board for a day trip to the Christmas wonderland.
Nearly £70,000 in donations was raised by the When You Wish Upon A Star charity that paid for the trip, which has now been organized for three consecutive years.
On their visit to Lapland the children meet Santa Claus and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, and enjoy skidoo and snowmobile rides and quad bike, sledge and husky rides.
Prestwick Airport’s chief executive, Mark Rodwell, said: “The annual trip to Lapland is a fantastic day out for these children and their families after all that they have been through. It is very humbling to see the sheer joy on their faces that this day brings and the airport is very proud that we are able to contribute towards making it happen.”
He added: “The charity behind this venture is a very worthwhile cause which relies almost exclusively on donations to carry out their work.”
Prestwick Airport supported the outing by waiving aircraft landing fees and all handling and parking fees as well.
