Silversea has announced that the placement of its newest ship, the M/V Prince Albert II, will change to operate Arctic cruises.
Originally, the cruise ship was set to be repositioned from the Antarctic to French Polynesia for the spring and summer of 2009, but now the cruise operator has said that it will return to its inaugural destination, the Arctic, on 1 June.
Before eventually heading south, the Prince Albert II will run nine Arctic expeditions.
Winter voyages for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 will not be changed, and will see the ship exploring the Antarctic, and also the South Georgia and Falkland islands.
The president and CEO of Silversea, Amerigo Perasso, commented: “I am confident her revised 2009 deployment will meet a great success given the overly positive response of our Arctic cruisers and the strong market demand for this type of product. With her ice-strengthened hull, Prince Albert II is quite naturally associated with polar sea ice regions, rather than other attractive, exotic destinations.”
Perasso went on to say: “Operating our vessel in close reach of our three leading markets (US, UK and Continental Europe) is all the more justified in the present economic conjuncture. Sailing out of Hamburg, Arctic-bound, with a bilingual (English/German) expedition team underlines our commitment to our German-speaking clientele”.
