Many Asian airlines have a reputation for high-quality in-flight service, especially when compared with European and North American carriers. It is, therefore, not entirely surprising that Skytrax, an international research and consultancy firm, gave Singapore Airlines two thumbs up by naming it the best airline of 2007. Singapore Airlines received this distinction after Skytrax completed a passenger survey in which the flagship carrier came out on top. It did, however, face some competition for the prized first place standing from Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways,
When determining an airline’s ranking, the survey takes into account all aspects of the flight, including on-board entertainment, meals served, airport lounges, the cabin crew, as well as anything else that would factor into the quality of the trip. Edward Plaisted, Skytrax’s CEO, noted that the yearly survey is an opportunity for customers to rate airlines that they have flown with against each other, thus giving an accurate picture of the quality of service offered by major carriers.
Singapore Airlines was founded in 1947 and is based at the Singapore Changi Airport. A member of Star Alliance, the carrier has a fleet of 99 aircraft, with an additional 88 planes presently on order, and it services 65 destinations. The most characteristic feature of Singapore Airline is the traditional—and very colourful– Malaysian clothing worn by the female flight attendants. The airline’s advertising and marketing has emphasized both the unique nature of the cabin crew, as well as the carrier’s modern fleet. Even economy class service is considered to be above average, when compared to other airlines. Passengers on long-haul flights enjoy wider seats with foot-rests, personal entertainment systems and lap-top power supplies.
