Singapore tourism given a boost by European travellers

Singapore witnessed a record increase in the number of tourists from Europe. The year 2007 saw as many as 1.3 million European visitors travelling to Singapore. This was an increase of 4.6 per cent in comparison to the statistics of the year 2006. Most of the tourists were from Germany and United Kingdom and constituted 165,000 and 496,000 tourists respectively. The visitors from Spain also saw a double-digit growth and stood at an impressive 17.5 % (25000) of the overall tourist inflow. Russia Denmark and France followed suit with 44,000, 31,000 and 99,000 visitors respectively.

Singapore tourism board that currently has offices in Frankfurt and London is all set to inaugurate its new offices in Moscow Russia by the middle of 2008. The board is looking to expand its base for future growth by improving its trade activities in Switzerland, France, Spain and Italy, while maintaining its sight on already existing operations in United Kingdom, Russia and Germany.

European travellers’ interest in Asia has been witnessing an upward trend due to the rising awareness of the historical and cultural attractions highlighted by the media regularly. Singapore, specifically has the benefits from its environmental factors like is geographical location that makes it connecting harp for the travellers going to Australia from Europe. The introduction of the new A380 by the Singapore airlines on the London Singapore route has also contributed effectively in increasing the number of visitors. Such active steps being taken by Singapore tourism board are only going to further add to those numbers and contribute to Singapore’s tourism industry.
