Skiers in Scotland welcome the heavy snows

On Saturday night, Scotland braced for more heavy snow as winter storms were forecast for the country once again.

The Met Office said that it was likely that the cold winter weather, which is the worst seen in nearly 20 years, would continue for several more days. The north of Scotland and the mountains were expected to see more snow, with rain probable in the west.

Motorists have been warned to drive with caution on Highland roads, as thousands of Scottish skiers were heading for the mountains. By Saturday morning, more than a foot of new snow had blanketed the Aviemore area.

A spokesperson for skiing in the Nevis Range said that current conditions were “phenomenal, absolutely wonderful”. Those heading to Glenshee Ski Centre were able to access the hill by the northern road, but the southern road was closed by the snow.

A number of other roads also were closed on Saturday night, and although Aberdeen woke up to more snow, the airport re-opened. The Aberdeen football team was forced to cancel its Scottish Cup tie game with East Fife at Pittodrie; and the Peterhead and Arbroath game was also cancelled, along with 200 fixtures throughout England and Wales.

Southern Scotland was also hit by new snow on Saturday, with four inches dropping on Eskdalemuir, in Dumfries and Galloway.
