The worsening economy is causing skiers to seek alternatives to expensive foreign skiing holidays, according to the results of a new survey.

InsureandGo conducted the survey, in which it also found that those who do go on their winter skiing holiday plan to economise once they’ve arrived – such a taking their sandwiches along to the slopes.

Overall, the research showed that as many as 75 per cent of skiers who went abroad on a skiing or snowboarding holiday in previous years were planning on staying at home this winter.

Of that number, one-fourth were giving up their skiing holiday so that they could afford to take their annual holiday next summer.

It was also found that 75 per cent of those who were headed abroad to ski were planning cost-cutting measures, such as staying at cheaper accommodations and taking packed lunches to slopes.

Another cost-saving move gaining in popularity was going to a country where skiing was cheaper, or to a less-expensive resort. Others were planning to borrow equipment and clothing to save on cost.

The founder of InsureandGo, Perry Wilson, said: “People are nervous about spending a lot of money in the current financial climate, but if they look hard there are many ways for skiers and snowboarders to save money on their winter holiday.

“Some countries are much cheaper to ski in than others and you can make a big saving by borrowing ski clothes off friends or taking packed lunches on to the slopes rather than eating in mountain restaurants, which can be exorbitant.”
