Spain loses ground to Turkey and Tunisia as favoured holiday destination

Izmir Pine BayThe CEO of travel agent Thomas Cook says Turkey, and latterly Tunisia, are replacing Spain as the preferred destinations for holidaying Britons. Commenting on the latest sales figures, CEO Peter Fankhauser explained that Turkey was definitely regaining its popularity while bookings for Tunisia were soaring.

The CEO was speaking to media sources following the release of fiscal results for the first three months of the current financial year. He noted that Spain had garnered 40 per cent of reservations for 2017 holidays, but this had dropped back to the normal third for this year.

Spain was the destination of choice last year simply because of instability and the possibility of terrorist attacks in Turkey and North Africa. Both nations have stabilised over the past year. The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has modified its travel advice for Tunisia from do not visit to stay away from war zones.

Thomas Cook added Tunisia back to holiday itineraries last year and the first flights in almost three years took off earlier this week. The holiday firm says holidaymakers have made numerous bookings and flights in the near future will be operating with fairly high numbers of passengers.

Mr Fankhauser says the shift in allegiances to Turkey, Tunisia and Greece is down to old-fashioned budgets and spare cash. He finished off with the claim that the costs of a Spanish sojourn were rising and punters were looking to get more bang for their buck by choosing alternate destinations.
