Spanish Airport Strike Talks Fail

Talks to avoid a nationwide airport strike in Spain over the Easter holiday and throughout the summer failed last week. Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA), which operates 20 of the country’s airports, was not able to reach an agreement with several of its unions’ leaders.

AENA staffers, which are 12,500-strong, are protesting a proposal to privatized the nation’s airports. They want written confirmation from the operator that none of them will lose their jobs or experience pay cuts due to the privatization. If they don’t get this, they have threatened to strike on some of the country’s busiest travel dates. These strike dates would basically shutdown airports all across Spain, and several airlines are calling on the European Commission to intervene and prevent the potential devastation. These 22 dates include:

– April 20-21 and 24-25

– May 2, 14-15 and 19-20

– June 13, 23 and 30

– July 1-4, 15 and 31

– August 1, 15 and 31

The strikes could really put a damper on holidays for Britons. Many nationals choose Spain as a destination over Easter and during the summer. It will also affect many travel companies, who will have to cancel their services to and from the country. Carriers that simply fly through Spanish airspace will be affected as well, and this could have a ripple effect across Europe, according to experts. This also comes as there is potential for another British Airways cabin crew strike. However, since it’s only mid-March now, there is still time for AENA and its unions to come to an agreement on this proposal. Let’s hope they can!
