Strauss-Kahn Hotel Maid Accused of Lying Under Oath

Dominique Strauss-KahnThe Sofitel New York hotel maid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), of sexually attacking her may be facing perjury charges or deportation from the US after claims emerged that she lied under oath. The 32-year-old is being intensely criticised after prosecutors were forced to tell a court last Friday that they found holes in her story that could seriously damage her witness credibility. It’s alleged that the hotel maid offered hotel guests sex in return for money and that Strauss-Kahn could have misunderstood the May 14 situation.

Strauss-Kahn has been charged with attempted rape and forcing oral sex after the Sofitel maid entered his suite. However, the case against the politician isn’t hanging on by much. This comes as reports say that the maid was recorded shortly after the incident telling an Arizona drug dealer not to worry, because the guy has a lot of money and she knows what she’s doing.

She had previously told prosecutors and detectives that, after the assault, she ran to the main hallway and waited until she saw the politician leave his suite. Then on Sunday, it was reported in French newspapers that the maid married the Gambian drug dealer last year.

Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance Jr filed a letter to the court saying that the hotel maid testified to a version of the events when she was questioned about her actions in the Grand Jury. However, she has admitted that this account was wrong and that, instead of waiting in the main hallway, she went on to clean another suite after the attack, as well as returned to clean Strauss-Kahn’s suite, before she reported the incident to her supervisor.

The letter also stated that the maid admitted in interviews that the information she gave on her application for asylum in the US in 2004 was false, including gang rape accusations. However, she had certified under penalty of being charged with perjury that the information was true, while she can also be deported for giving false statements.

About hole in her assault accusations, the maid’s attorney, Kenneth Thompson, said she continued cleaning the suites so that she didn’t lose her job and knew her supervisor would be approaching from the stairs any moment. As for the asylum application, he said that his client was a victim of female genital mutilation but didn’t think that would be enough by itself to claim asylum, so she allowed someone to help her exaggerate the application. He also insists that the maid really was raped, even if the account on the application wasn’t accurate.

Thompson also says that his client stands by her initial allegations. If she is charged with perjury – giving false testimony in a way that is material to a case, which is a class D felony under New York state law – she could face up to 7 years in prison.
