Stricter UK laws to safeguard holidays booked on the internet

holidays abroad1More effective laws to govern the sale of holidays on the internet are due to come into effect next July. UK holidaymakers will be afforded the same protection when they book their packages online as they do when buying packages from High Street travel agents.

The new rules will ensure holidaymakers receive compensation if the online agency they booked through goes bankrupt. Buyers’ rights to refunds will also have to be clearly detailed as another part of the revamp. Advocates say a clause should be included which will give consumers full protection when they buy different parts of holidays from different sources.

Prior to the launch of the public consultation in the law change, consumer secretary Margot James explained that legislation needed to be updated to reflect the way the average Brit booked their holidays. She added that the disparity between booking holidays online and through an agent needed to be rectified.

She carried on by saying the proposed change would safeguard another quarter of the 10 million holiday packages Britons took every year. The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has voiced its support for the forthcoming changes. ABTA stated that 75 per cent of Britons had booked their holidays online last year.

The association added that only half of these holidays were protected if the travel provider went bust or there was some other unforeseen mishap. ABTA finished off with the codicil that all consumers should enjoy equal rights and protection no matter where their points of purchase were.
