Student charged with plane bomb
Posted on: December 28th, 2009 by Martin FellowesUmar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, a student that had been studying in London, has been officially charged by a US Fedral Judge with attempting to blow up a US bound plane. The suspect was restrained by passengers and cabin crew after he tried to combine to substances that would have caused an explosion if mixed correctly. There was an extensive fire around where the man was sitting and he is currently in hospital receiving treatment for burns.
The Delta Airways flight en-route from Amsterdam was making its final approach to Detroit Airport when the incident took place. A woman was her to be asking the man what he was doing in a panicked like voice. As passengers lept to subdue the Nigerian national a fire broke out where he was sitting, but was quickly extinguished by crew on the flight.
After landing a team of FBI and law enforcement officers came on to the aircraft and arrested Mutallab and escorted him off the plane. The student has apparently already admitted that he was working for Al-Qaeda and that he bought the explosive goods in Yemen. He had then taken a flight from his home country of Nigeria to Amsterdam where he then boarded the Detroit bound flight.
Law enforcement from the US, Britain, the Netherlands and Nigeria are said to be working together to establish how this happened. His father, who is thought to work for a bank in the African country, has said that he tried warn of the possible instability of his son to the US. It has also been revealed that he was on an international watch, which is asking the question, how did this happen?
