Suarez issues general apology for use of negro

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez today issued a general apology in the wake of being hit with an eight-match ban for being found guilty of racially abusing French left-back Patrice Evra.

Suarez hasn’t apologised directly to Evra yet, whom he apparently called  a “negro”. In his statement, the Uruguayan explained that he admitted to the commission saying a word in Spanish just the once, and only once, but never in a derogatory manner. If it offends anyone, he continued, then the striker would like to apologise for that.

Suarez added that he told the members of the panel that he won’t use the word ever again on an English football pitch. An independent commission of the Football Association ruled that Suarez, aged 24, racially abused Evra throughout the October 1-1 draw between bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester United.

The report from the commission stated that Suarez used the term “negro” at least seven times in two minutes while claiming that he has tarnished the reputation of English football with his behaviour. It also criticised the number 7 for providing evidence that was both “unreliable” and “inconsistent”.

Liverpool FC decided not to launch an appeal against the suspension but will continue to challenge all of the independent commission’s findings. Today,  player and club released statements that refused to to accept responsibility while also criticising the way that the affair has been handled.
