Holiday Extras has released the result of a poll in which 38 per cent of British travellers indicated that they would refuse to pay a fee to check in luggage at the airport.
Nearly half of the 553 customers responding said that the idea of having to pay to check in a bag was ridiculous, and would pay if forced to, but “unwillingly”.
David Stratton, the head of sales at Holiday Extras, said: “Most airlines now encourage travellers to opt for online check-in and many short-haul airlines have introduced fees for checking in hold baggage.”
Slightly less than 10 per cent of Holiday Extras customers said they would avoid the check-in charges by travelling with hand luggage only, and four per cent indicated that the would not pay over £40 to check in a bag.
Three-fourths of the respondents reported that airlines losing their luggage is a major worry, yet more than two-thirds have never actually had their luggage lost.
Just over one-fourth said they normally purchase travel insurance, while approximately 27 per cent said they keep important items in their hand luggage. Twenty-two per cent indicated that they divide essential items with a travelling partner.
Twenty-five per cent of the Holiday Extras customers who responded to the survey said that they don’t give a second thought to their luggage.
