Survey predicts more personalisation in 2011 cruise trends

A survey by the world’s cruise line representative body is predicting increased cruising in 2011, with more personalised options available.

The Cruise Line International Association, representing travel agents and 25 cruise lines worldwide, says 2011 will see an increase in passengers taking cruises and a shift of focus to previously unexplored routes including short European river cruises. Changes in seabourne trends are expected to include personalised shore excursions and more individually focused onboard activities.

Members of the association who took part in the survey are positive about the growing popularity of river cruises, which use smaller ships and are normally of shorter duration than ocean-going cruises. Europe’s larger waterways are perfect for river cruises, with their scenery changing from rural to urban and many historic towns and cites sited along their banks.

The association is expecting to see more personalisation of the cruise experience, including exclusive or private shore trips specially tailored to individuals or small groups. Also on offer will be more variety in shipboard activities, with theme cruises featuring food and drink, culture, music and art expected to be popular with the sector’s changing customer base. The new themes will be designed to attract independent holidaymakers reluctant to book a cruise in the past.

Passengers from the baby-boomer generation, families and mixed groups of all ages are the new focus of the change in cruise activities, with gourmets expected to appreciate moves to give more cuisine choices including speciality restaurants, local sourcing of fresh foods and guest chefs.

This year, 14 new cruise ships will be launched, the largest being the Disney Dream, Costa Favalosa , Carnival Magic, and Celebrity Silhouette.
