Survey shows Greek car hire as the most costly

In a recent survey, it was found that Greece has emerged as Europe’s most expensive car hire destination, prompting an expert on the subject to offer advice to consumers about avoiding hidden costs that can substantially increase the cost of renting a vehicle.
In an article appearing in the Daily Telegraph, car hire expert Sophie Butler wrote that car rental costs can add significantly to holiday expenses unless consumers look carefully for the best bargain.
Butler noted that searching for deals on offer can save holidaymakers up to £100 in many cases – the difference in renting a vehicle in Tenerife or on the Greek island of Zante.
Some of the least expensive destinations for car hire listed in the study include Croatia, Bulgaria and Turkey, while, in addition to Greece, the most costly are Spain, Portugal and the Balearic islands.
Rental car costs were based on hiring a four-door, air-conditioned Renault Clio from 2-9 August.
Butler warns consumers that the car rental industry is filled with hidden costs. She said: “Another thing to consider are the hidden costs. The prices quoted here all include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). But CDW isn’t always included in the basic price, in which case you will have to buy it separately,” adding: “And even with CDW, you can still be liable for repairs to some parts of the car, including the tyres, underside and roof.”
