Survey shows where pound buys travellers most

The pound will go the furthest on a holiday in the Czech Republic or Hungary according to the latest Post Office travel survey.

For those travelling to long-haul destinations, Britons will find the pound stronger and costs lower in South Africa and Thailand.

“Although year on year sterling has dropped in value by over 10% against the forint and 15% against the koruna, its relative strength against these currencies, combined with lower local tourists costs, make Hungary and the Czech Republic two of the best value destinations for 2009,” commented Gordon Gourlay, the managing director of First Rate, which is the Post Office’s foreign exchange wholesaler.

First Rate is predicting that UK holidaymakers will be looking at exchange rates more closely than in the past, in order to make the most of currency fluctuations when travelling.

“We expect that in 2009 foreign exchange retailers will find that many people who are travelling to the eurozone will be monitoring exchange rates well in advance so they can purchase their travel money to coincide with rises in sterling’s strength against the euro, rather than just their imminent departure,” he added.

In the survey it was found that Bulgaria, Croatia and Turkey are cheaper as holiday destinations than any countries in the eurozone, although Spain did rank in the top 10 of the lowest-priced destinations.
