Swimmer Dan Wallace banned after pleading guilty to drink driving

Dan WallaceBritish Olympic swimming ace Dan Wallace has been disqualified from driving for one year after being caught drunk driving. Appearing before Stirling Sheriff Court, the swimmer explained that when he was arrested in the early hours of 1 June he thought he had been okay to drive.

Prosecutor Laura Knox told the court police patrol officers had stopped the accused at 03:15 on the night in question to check his licence and vehicle documents. She carried on by saying the officers smelt alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked him to take a breathalyser test.

The reading showed an alcohol reading of double the legal limit in Scotland. Speaking on behalf of the 24-year-old, lawyer Ewen Roy said his client had been out with friends in Stirling and had drunk intermittently. He added that Wallace had also stated he had eaten and then laid off the drink before getting behind the wheel.

In summary, Mr Roy stated that Wallace had thought he was not under the influence of alcohol and perfectly okay to drive the two miles home to Bridge of Allan. Speaking outside the court, Wallace said he felt saddened to have let people down, but needed to move forward.

The court also handed Wallace a £600 fine for the offence. The driving ban was a double whammy for the swimmer as the British Swimming and Scottish Swimming organisation has banned him from national competitions for three months. This ban means he will miss out on competing in the British Summer Championships at the end of next month.
