Swiss train travel more convenient than ever
Posted on: May 7th, 2008 by Jean AdamsTrain travel in Switzerland has become more convenient than ever before, after this western European country decided to create a special travel pass, which allows passengers to use all trains, buses, trolleys and lake boats across the country. As an added advantage, pass holders may also visit up to 400 museums and galleries free of charge. Switzerland is home to nearly 250 train, bus and public transit companies, yet a single pass will give passengers easy access to all of these forms of transportation. The pass has been developed by the Swiss Travel Systems (STS), but is only one of several products offered, including a discounted Youth Pass or a so-called Flexi Pass. In the case of the all-in-one combination, however, passengers get to enjoy unlimited access to all forms of transportation-including urban, rural, regional and national-and railway travel extending over 20,000km of tracks.
The STS unlimited pass is especially convenient for tourists, as it provides them with economical transportation throughout the country, as well as free entry to some of the most prominent attractions. Additionally, the pass offers holders the opportunity to buy cable tickets, as well as mountain train passes for 50 percent less than what one would normally pay. Rail travel remains hugely popular in Switzerland, among both locals and tourists alike, mainly due to its impeccable reputation for punctuality, as well as the fact that all trains are modern and well maintained.
