Teenager awarded for catching a bus
Posted on: August 17th, 2009 by Peter HeadleyA teenager from Bury, near Manchester was amazed when he opened the post one morning to find a certificate from his local council that congratulated him on hopping on to a bus.
Bobby who is 15-years-old, went to a summer scheme run by Bury Youth Services who awarded the strange certificate. When it came through the post he thought one of his GCSE awards had come early so the whole family sat around in anticipation for the opening.
The award read that Bobby could travel to a bus stop, wait in line for the bus to arrive, he was then able to board the bus and take a seat while watching the world go by outside. His family found it hilarious and could not stop laughing. His little brother Joe also went on the scheme, but did not receive such an award.
“At first I thought I’d got some sort of GCSE early. When I read out the details to the family we all fell about laughing. The Bury Youth Scheme is excellent and we get the chance to a lot of different activities but I can’t see the point of the certificate at all,” said Bobby.
A spokesperson from the scheme explained the certificate was a way of recognising that Bobby had to understand time tables and was self sufficient in getting himself to the venue.
