Teenager killed in go-kart accident

A teenage girl from Cambridgeshire was killed when her scarf was got caught up in her kart and strangled her at Cambridgeshire Raceway. Suzanne Cornwell, 18, was invited to the track as part of a group in an after-hours session on Thursday evening when the raceway was supposed to be closed. The accident happened as she drove the kart around the track and it got caught in the engine as the ends flapped around. Once it was caught her airways were cut off and she was asphyxiated.

It has been reported that a member of staff had given the group permission to enter the circuit. The raceway is located in Caxton where paramedics and police attended the scene at 21:40 on Thursday night. Suzanne was unconscious when the ambulance arrived to the scene and had suffered what has been described as a ‘sever injury’ to her neck. Suzanne was from Hardwick in Cambridgeshire and she was immediately taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where she died from her injuries the following day.

An investigation by the police and the council is now under way and a track marshall who had been working at the raceway for two years was sacked following the incident. The premises were due to be locked up at 21:00 after the rest of the staff left at 20:00 but the marshall switched off the CCTV and sneaked in his girlfriend and five of her friends.  Suzanne has been described as a ‘gorgeous girl’ who will be sorely missed by her friends and family. In January, 2010, the raceway is due to host the British Schools Karting Championship.
