Tennessee hopes to attract Hispanic tourists
Posted on: October 18th, 2007 by Garry RobertsonThe US State of Tennessee is reaching out to Hispanics in an effort to encourage them to spend their next vacation in this state.
Tennessee’s department of tourism has now begun advertising in Spanish periodicals and will soon launch a new, Spanish-language version of its website in order to woo more Hispanic tourists. Tennessee’s most recent move shows the growing importance of Hispanics in the US, as they now form the largest minority group in the country, according to recent census data. The tourists that Tennessee is hoping to attract are also mainly Spanish-speaking Americans, which is why tourism officials have reached out to minority language newspapers published in the
US.
Ramon Cisneros, who heads
Tennessee’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was very pleased that state authorities have launched a targeted marketing campaign, as it helps break down the stereotype that all Hispanics live in poverty. According to Cisneros, the campaign is clearly geared towards a growing class of professionals, who are of Hispanic background, such as lawyers, doctors and teachers, all of whom tend to earn enough to secure a comfortable existence.
Nashville, Tennessee, is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the US, as the state’s capital and has been at the centre of
US music history for decades. The state has a population of over 5.6 million. Hispanics, however, only form approximately 3% of the population.
Tennessee’s tourism department was established in 1976. It currently maintains 13 tourist centres along Interstate highways, providing information and direction to visitors. The majority of tourism in
Tennessee is comprised of domestic visitors.
