Thames omitted from new underground map
Posted on: September 16th, 2009 by Taylor SmithThe London Underground maps over the years have been expanding and changing. The simple format of straight lines gives travellers a general idea in which direction they are heading but it does not included the twists and turns of the lines they travel because it was just look like a jumbled up mess. The next step in evolutionary process was something a little more drastic though, they removed the River Thames from the map.
As well as the river being taken away, so has the background of expanding rings so that passengers knew which zone they were in in case their travel card did not cover the area. Dashed lines for limited service routes have also being abolished in favour of a just straight single colour.
According to a spokesperson for Transport for London the map has become cluttered over the years even with the straight lines. This has prompted bosses to act and make it more appealing and understandable to new visitors and old alike. However some tourist groups have said that tourists may now not know where the Thames is if they wanted to head there or what type of ticket they should buy because it does not show it on the map. The new maps are already being given out at platforms around the capital.
