The adventure tour to end them all – sunny Iraq

Adventure tourists looking for the ultimate – and possibly very uncomfortable – adventure will love the offer of a six-day Iraq motorbike tour complete with AK47s and armed guards.

British adventure holiday specialists TrailRidingUK will be offering the Iraq trip from early next year, with ‘all-inclusive’ given a whole new meaning. Along with the breathtaking views, ancient sites, aggressive wildlife and even more aggressive bandits comes your very own security guard armed with AK 47s and Glock pistols.

The six-day ride through Iraq’s tough terrain will cost £3,000, with insurance not included as it may well be impossible to obtain. TrailRidingUK’s boss, Steve Askin, is an ex-soldier who worked as a private security consultant in the war-torn country for six years. Daytime visits to towns – provided it’s safe – will be followed by nights in tents pitched before the desert cold sets in.

His contacts made during that time, from trustworthy ‘fixers’ to several local police chiefs, should hopefully ensure the most dangerous encounters riders have are with deadly snakes and scorpions. The armed guards, he says, are there to secure each day’s route and protect the group at night.

Ten bikers is the maximum number, with tough all-terrain bikes provided as part of the package. The six day, 930 mile ride begins at Erbil in the north of Iraq and visits Sulemaniyah and Kirkuk before tracing the Iranian border and returning to Erbil. Essentials for applicants are a high level of fitness to cope with the searing temperatures and challenging terrain, and personal injury insurance.

Prospective riders are told to expect 40˚C heat, unforgiving landscapes and a wild beauty they’ll never forget. Mr Askin says he can’t wait to show his clients the stark glory of the region.
