The Gap Year

On the 16th of August A-level results are announced and now seems to be the time that students decide whether or not to take a gap yearGap year travelers enjoy life enhancing experiences, independence and escapism. Booking a one-way ticket out of

London, and buying onward flights later, is might not be as feasible as it was 20 years ago. So many more countries are accessible but too many countries now require you to show a ticket out before they let you in. The vast majority of these are routed via Australia and

New Zealand. South America is also very popular, with the Chilean capital, Santiago, used as the main gateway in and out of the continent, and

Peru the most popular country to explore in depth. Other new destinations starting to prove popular with younger travelers include Easter Island, Panama, Namibia and

Ecuador, while the Trans-Siberian railway, and is growing in popularity. A few also stick to the good old-fashioned Inter-Rail ticket around

Europe. If you do go round the world, the strength of the two main commercial airline alliances, Oneworld, which includes BA, American, JAL and Iberia; and Star Alliance, including

United, Singapore and South African has made for enormous flexibility in routes and stopovers. The way the tickets are sold can be very different, however. For example, oneworld offer the Explorer ticket, you choose to hop between a certain number of continents and you are then allowed four flights within each continent, whereas the price of the Star Alliance rtw ticket is based on how many miles your itinerary involves.
