Thief located in rental SUV with GPS system
Posted on: November 12th, 2008 by Taylor SmithA man from Miami was arrested last weekend when deputies from the Collier County Florida) Sheriff’s office said that he had broken into a vehicle in North Naples and fled in a rental car that was equipped with a global positioning system (GPS).
Deputies, who were aided by the master GPS at the rental car company, put out an alert, which led to the suspect’s apprehension in Charlotte County. Leondaro Ching, 36 years old, was arrested and charged with burglary and petty theft.
According to the sheriff’s report two men, Greg Baker and William Moyer, were in North Naples on Saturday morning and saw Ching inside Baker’s truck. They confronted him and one of the men detained him. When Baker retrieved his wallet from the truck he saw that approximately $11 was missing from it.
The report stated that Ching told them not to call the police and returned $10 of the money, and then left in a black SUV – a Ford Expedition. When Baker inspected his truck he found that the locks on his briefcase had been tampered with, and he called the authorities.
Deputies ran the number on the Expedition’s license plate, and learned that it was a vehicle rented in Miami. Sheriff’s office dispatchers contacted the rental car company and learned that it was equipped with a GPS, and that it was headed north on I-75. The information led to the interception of the vehicle and Ching’s arrest.
